WiMax Gets Boost From Intel

WiMax has been promised for a while; but it may now be getting the push it needs. Intel announced today that it will be marketing a WiMax chip at $45 in 1,000 chip quantities. That price, together with Intel’s marketing muscle, may help WiMax become a mainstay in the wireless world.

WiMax is the acronym for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. The technology has the potential for radically changing the current platform landscape. Among those that could be affected are municipalities looking to offer wireless Internet, regional bells currently selling access to their local facilities, cable and cellular companies.
