Verizon’s FiOS: “There’s Something Viral About This”

There’s something “viral” about Verizon’s new FiOS (pronounced f eye’ oh s) network . . . at least that’s how one well-intentioned Verizon exec put it during yesterday’s marathon analyst call. Verizon spent around 2 ½ hours and issued 52 slides on FiOS – by far the most detailed information to date on the massive Verizon project.

While the Verizon team’s enthusiasm for its project seemed contagious – at least within its own ranks — Wall Street seemed to catch a different bug: During a day when the market was up — and just points below its all-time high — Verizon’s shares fell more than 3%.

Verizon’s capital plans for FiOS probably left financial analysts feeling a little queasy.

The Adelphia Franchise Assignments: A Post Mortem

The Adelphia franchise assignments were the most difficult in the last decade, and, with any luck, will keep that status for some time to come.

Frankly, Aldephia, Time Warner and Comcast played their hands very well; their strategy minimized the number of communities that actually considered the assignment request and tested the endurance of those communities with the fortitude to defend local franchising authority rights before the bankruptcy court. I’m proud to say that one of my clients was among that last group standing.
